Ali Cherfaoui pleaded guilty to second degree murder on Monday in the 2012 killing of his estranged wife.

Authorities say Cherfaoui shot Chahnaz Kebaier multiple times while she was waiting to pick up her children outside Scroggs Elementary.

Cherfaoui fled from police and was arrested after a brief chase. Kebaier died at UNC Hospitals two hours later.

With the guilty plea, Cherfaoui will serve up to 42 years in prison. He has already pleaded to second-degree kidnapping, discharging a weapon on school property, and possession of a weapon on school property.
