UNC has announced for the 11th year in a row a record number of first-year applicants.

The university received 35,748 first-year applications from students in all 50 states and 124 countries around the world. This is an increase of 12 percent from last year.

At least 11,307 of the applicants come from North Carolina, which is a 10 percent increase from last year. International applicants counted for 3,778 of the total, a 19 percent increase.

According to a press release, the university plans to enroll about 4,100 of these students.

“We continue to be grateful that so many terrific students are considering us for the next step in their academic journeys,” said Stephen Farmer, Vice Provost for Enrollment and Undergraduate Admissions. “Their interest in Carolina reinforces our commitment to treating each applicant with the greatest of care and respect.”

Applicants from low-income households totaled 4,409 students, up from 3,488. Low-income households were counted if students qualified for an application fee wavier, roughly the same requirements for Carolina Covenant. Carolina Covenant promises a debt-free education to those who qualify with a program of loans, grants and work-study jobs.

The university expects students who applied in October to have their decision by the end of January. Students who applied later should receive their decision by March.
