UNC football defensive coordinator Gene Chizik was honored as finalist for the Broyles Award, on Tuesday.

Chizik was one of five finalists for the award, which is given annually to the top assistant in college football.

Oklahoma offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley won the 2015 Broyles Award for the job done leading the offensive attack for the fourth-ranked Oklahoma Sooners. Riley is in his first year at Oklahoma after working as the offensive coordinator at East Carolina University.

The 32-year-old Riley is the youngest ever recipient of the award.

The other finalists included Baylor offensive coordinator Kendal Briles, Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart and Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables.

Of the five finalists, four of them will be coaching against each other in the upcoming bowl season.

Chizik and Briles will match wits during the Russell Athletic Bowl matchup of the 11-2 North Carolina Tar Heels and 9-3 Baylor Bears.

Venables and Riley will face off in one College Football Playoff semi-final with top-ranked Clemson and number four Oklahoma.

Smart will remain with second-ranked Alabama through the College Football Playoff and, therefore, could be in line for a matchup against Venables or Riley, depending on the outcome of the two semi-final games. Smart will be taking over as the head coach at Georgia following Alabama’s season.
