UNC has found out where it will be headed for bowl season.
Carolina suffered just the second loss on the season for the Tar Heels against the number-one ranked Clemson Tigers on Saturday night in the ACC Championship Game by a 45-37 score.
Coach Larry Fedora said on Sunday the Tar Heels are ready to move on to the Russell Athletic Bowl where Carolina will take on the Baylor Bears.
“We’re looking forward to competing in the Russell Athletic Bowl and representing the University of North Carolina and the Atlantic Coast Conference,” Fedora said. “This is a great opportunity for our players to continue the season and have a terrific experience in Orlando. Baylor is an outstanding program from the Big 12 that has an electrifying offense and should be a tremendous challenge for our team.”
The bowl game pits two high-powered offenses and represents a bit of a homecoming for Fedora, who started his coaching career at Baylor.
The Tar Heels fell from eighth to No. 10 in the final Associated Press poll after the loss to the Tigers. Baylor finished the regular season in the Big 12 with a 9-3 record and ranked No. 18 in the country.
Fedora says the Tar Heels will be ready to play in the Orlando bowl game and won’t be worried about missing out in the bigger bowl games on New Year’s Day.
Carolina and Baylor will face off in the Russell Athletic Bowl on Tuesday, December 29, at 5:30. This will mark the first time that Carolina and Baylor have met on the football field.
Clemson, by the way, blitzed Oklahoma 40-6 in last year’s Russell Athletic Bowl.
Number one Clemson and number four Oklahoma are set for a rematch in this year’s College Football Playoff semifinals.
If you believe in those sorts of things, that could be a great omen for next year’s Tar Heels.
But for now, there’s one more chance for this season’s edition of Carolina to get win number 12.
