Officials at AAA Carolinas say they expect gas prices to climb after a gasoline explosion in Shelby County, Alabama, late Monday evening. Colonial Pipeline shut down Lines One and Two in response to the explosion.

Tiffany Wright is the Public Relations Manager for AAA Carolinas. She says, “If September’s shutdown was any indicator of what we should expect, prices are definitely going to spike at the pump.”

In September, Colonial shut down the pipeline due to a leak. Fuel prices then increased in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. Both North and South Carolina also experienced shortages at gas stations for about 10 days. The company then built a bypass which allowed product to move more swiftly after the shutdown.

In a released statement, officials say Colonial is one of the southeast’s biggest resources for gas, diesel and jet fuel.

Officials also say they are working closely with the Oil Price Information Service to provide the latest information on Colonial Pipeline.
