Two prominent figures on the UNC – Chapel Hill campus that were in place on January 1, 2019, would not be when February rolled around. Chancellor Carol Folt announced in mid-January that she would be resigning at the end of the academic year. When making that announcement, Folt also ordered the removal of the remaining base of the Confederate monument known as Silent Sam after the statue was toppled last August.
The UNC System Board of Governors then accelerated Folt’s resignation to the end of January.
This month’s Community Forum walks through the time from that initial decision on January 14 through the events that followed.
