Mack Brown has some bad memories to erase at Virginia.
During Brown’s first tenure here, his teams contributed to UNC’s 14-game losing streak at Virginia, which finally ended in 2010. Carolina is 7-3 against the Cavaliers since then, including four wins there.
The most disappointing of the Tar Heels’ five defeats in Charlottesville under Brown was in 1996 when his 6th-ranked team led UVa 17-3 in the fourth quarter before losing a true heartbreaker 20-17. The eventual 10-2 Heels also lost their shot at a bid to the old Bowl Championship Series (BCS).
Carolina returns to Scott Stadium Saturday night, when it has a lot more important things to accomplish than improving on the head coach’s 3-8 career record against UVa. The No. 15 Heels can keep their nationally ranked run going during “rivalry month” when State, Virginia, Duke and Wake Forest fall on the revised schedule.
Asked how long it took him to get over his last trip to Charlottesville, Brown said he remembers all losses more than the wins, presumably because pain is a stronger emotion than euphoria. And this one was truly painful, if you care to recall it along with me.
For the first time, Brown had a better team than George Welsh’s Cavaliers and played like it by building what looked like an insurmountable lead after linebacker Brian Simmons’ intercepted a pass and returned it to the Virginia red zone.
On third down, quarterback Chris Keldorf threw a pass intended for Octavus Barnes, but it was picked off by Antoine Harris and returned 95 yards for a touchdown. That awakened the Virginia students who had been busier taunting the Tar Heels’ bench than paying attention to a game that looked lost.
“It was a bad decision,” Brown said of the play call. “I was behind our bench trying to break up a fight. But we still had plenty of time to win the game.” The Tar Heels seemingly gave it away, letting Virginia score another touchdown and kick a field goal to finish the stunner.
UNC got a measure of revenge next year in Chapel Hill as Dre Bly’s early pick-six sparked a 48-20 rout. Brown left for Texas after that season and hasn’t played at Virginia since. Until Saturday night, when his new Tar Heels try to settle an old score with, once again, a lot at stake.

Chansky's Notebook: Bailing OutRoy Williams probably had reasons for the soft statements. Carolina fans reacted strongly to the video of a team party after the win over Duke. Only Armando Bacot and Day’Ron Sharpe were in the video, but a statement from players and managers said it was supposed to be a closed event that other students and […]

Chansky's Notebook: Not Him, Please! You can bet Bills fans are pulling for the Packers this weekend. I’ve always been amazed at how rabid the Buffalo fans are for their pro football team. Yes, their Bills lost four straight Super Bowls in the early 1990s, but they have stuck with a team that has been pretty terrible over the next […]

Chansky's Notebook: No Biddy BasketballDoes good defense lead to good offense or vice versa? Coaches differ on whether players are more motivated by good defense or offense. For example, if you are a lock-down defender and help the team get stops, that could make it easier to score on the other end. Or does a hoop make you dig […]

Art’s Angle: Kinds Of WinsThere was a moral victory and a had-to-have victory on Carolina’s first day of play in the New Year. For a while, the moral victory looked like more in an Orange Bowl game that most people thought the Tar Heels had opted out of their chance to win. Having gone ahead 27-20 on Sam Howell’s […]

Chansky’s Notebook: Cardinal SinGarrison Brooks said the Tar Heels just don’t have it so far this season. After UNC’s 72-67 loss at Georgia Tech, which all things considered is probably the worst of four defeats to date, Brooks said the team doesn’t have enough “want to” on defense. That is a cardinal sin of Carolina basketball, which […]

Chansky's Notebook: Leaky Steps UpDean Smith used to say he’ll be happy with a one-point win. The legendary UNC basketball coach struggled spiritually between playing well according to his teachings, regardless of outcome, and winning no matter how poorly you play. Since his job was to win and he was so competitive, he chose the latter. If he was […]

Chansky's Notebook: Rock(et) StarBen Kiernan was UNC’s MVP of the Notre Dame game. When Mack Brown went over the 31-17 loss, he gave mixed reviews to the two main branches of his Tar Heels’ play. Chansky's Notebook: Goals and AmbitionsGarrison Brooks has both opportunity and pressure. On paper, the ACC looks as weak as it has been in some time due to widespread losses to graduation and early departures to the NBA, and no sure-shot superstars in the incoming recruiting classes. A beneficiary of this development is Brooks, the Carolina senior who was second-team All-ACC last year and earned the league’s […]
