Adding Extra Cheer To This COVID Year
A perspective from Krista Caraway
While putting up our Christmas tree and hanging our stockings with care, I couldn’t help but be bit by the Holiday bug and feel excited. Then I went to the grocery store. Mask on, Germ-X in pocket, keep distance. Impending gloom and doom. I wave to my friends from a distance but crave hugging them and wishing them well. I crave joining friends and family and feeling holiday cheer.
I can’t be the only one feeling this way, right? Let’s join together (while apart) and add some extra cheer to this COVID year. On Thursday December 24th, 2020 at 5:00 pm sharp after the bell tower chimes the 5th chime, let’s all come outside, stand in our driveways (or from your open windows) and sing together through song while apart physically. I suggested this idea on NextDoor and the response has been nothing but positive and is all a buzz. Our neighborhoods are “in” as are our town mayors.
Below are some well-loved tunes. Simply print out as many copies as you need, staple together, and give one to each member of your home / pod (or view from your mobile device). Let’s join in unity and blanket our community with carols and wholesome holiday cheer.
I look forward to feeling that Holiday spirit with you.

Jingle Bells
Dashing through the snow On a one-horse open sleigh, Over the fields we go, Laughing all the way;
Bells on bob-tail ring,
Making spirits bright,
What fun it is to ride and sing A sleighing song tonight.
Jingle bells, jingle bells, Jingle all the way!
O what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh.
A day or two ago, I thought I’d take a ride, And soon Miss Fanny Bright
Was seated by my side;
The horse was lean and lank;
Misfortune seemed his lot; He got into a drifted bank, And we, we got upsot.
Jingle bells, jingle bells, Jingle all the way!
O what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh.
A day or two ago,
The story I must tell
I went out on the snow
And on my back I fell;
A gent was riding by
In a one-horse open sleigh,
He laughed as there I sprawling lie, But quickly drove away.
Jingle bells, jingle bells, Jingle all the way!
O what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh.
Now the ground is white
Go it while you’re young, Take the girls tonight
And sing this sleighing song; Just get a bob-tailed bay Two-forty as his speed
Hitch him to an open sleigh And crack! you’ll take the lead.
Jingle bells, jingle bells, Jingle all the way!
O what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh.
Joy To The World
Joy to the world! The Lord is come. Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare Him room; And heav’n and nature sing,
And heav’n and nature sing.
And heav’n and heav’n and nature sing.
Joy to the world, the Savior reigns
Let men their songs employ.
While fields and floods, Rocks, hills, and plains Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat the sounding joy
No more let sin and sorrows grow, Nor thorns infest the ground;
He comes to make His blessings flow Far as the curse is found,
Far as the curse is found,
Far as, far as the curse is found.
He rules the world with truth and grace, And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness.
And wonders of His love,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders, wonders of His love.
