This month celebrates five years of writing this column. I’ve been a little less constant than I’d like on publishing and aim to improve moving forward. There are a few themes I’ve been focused on, understanding business data and metrics, leadership and people lessons, and ideas to drive business via marketing and planning. Are there any that really resonate with you? Always love the feedback and encourage sharing the information provided.

This week, I am sharing the “creative” process I use:

1) Walk and don’t think about writing – Especially during the pandemic, I spent a lot more time walking. Sometimes taking a walking meeting or listening to music or a podcast. Most of the time I am not thinking about what to write next. That randomly gets triggered by either something I hear or someone making a comment in regards to something I said.

2) Reading – I like to read mostly business or investing related books and blogs. To many people, that may sound boring but to me, I always learn something new and love learning. I recently read a book that one of the examples they had was using a simple approach to what seemed to be a complex problem. They were looking at a village that should have been suffering from a nasty worm infection but were not and how they applied what they learned to other villages with a simple cloth to strain their drinking water and a few other basic changes in their environment.

3) Capture my thoughts – I have been using Trello to capture topics and ideas on my phone. That way I always have a place to go to find my rough framework and build out the topic. Every now and again I have a “great idea” and either forget to capture it or miss a critical point I want to make. Ouch!

Think through

I enjoy writing this blog and hope you enjoy reading it. I appreciate the feedback I always try to focus on relevance and quality. I hit a bit of a writers block mid-year. With some time out in the sun, and not putting pressure on myself to “crank out content,” I feel refreshed and hope to increase frequency of postings
