As the holidays are behind us and already1/12th the way into 2024, thought now would be a good time to “pause” and look in the mirror. Everyone talks about business in terms of people, Others say “people buy from people they like.” And all too often we hear “it’s all about the people”. Maybe it’s “hire the best people”.
Do you say or think any of those as well? And if you do – are you living what you say on a daily basis or do you just talk the talk?
Let’s look at three areas to reflect on to give your business a competitive advantage and also focus on people, including yourself along with friends and family.
1) Employees – What are you doing to retain and motivate your team? Are the best people being rewarded in ways that are meaningful to them? Do you have an open, candid, and respectful environment? Do you know what your key and high performers really want to retain them? Are you investing in their learning and development? Are there opportunities for growth?
2) Customers – Do you really know your customers, who they are, what motivates them to buy from you? Do you take time to personally ask open-ended questions that cannot be answered with a yes or no. Too many times a customer is asked how is everything. The answer is typically “fine”. What can you learn from that? A question I like to use after thanking them for their business is asking what is one thing we could do better. Pause, and let them respond. It is amazing what you might learn with that one question.
3) Self – Taking time to recharge for any small business leader is critical. Use your time for something you really enjoy, focused time with family and / or friends. Take time for yourself in a way that is meaningful for you. Some people get energy from travel, learning a new skills, or just spending time unplugged from the business and allowing the team to handle and grow in your absence. The key is it is about you and getting recharged.
Think through
Find ways to learn about your employees, customers, and yourself. What is it that motivates them to come to work, or purchase from you. What is it you need to stay motivated? A small business is hard work. If you are not keeping your passion for the business high, time to sell and move on! I personally have found with my work styles and intense focus – I need to take a “hard disconnect” at regularly scheduled intervals. Doing that gives me the ability to stay energized and positive vs keep on grinding without a break and maybe not allowing me to be my best.
