North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper joined in on March Madness and made his picks for this year’s tournament with 99.9 FM The Fan’s Joe Ovies and Adam Gold.
True to his title, Cooper heavily favored North Carolina and ACC teams in his bracket.
This was emphasized when he picked Florida State to upset No. 1 Gonzaga in the Sweet 16.
“Having gone to the [ACC Tournament] a couple of night,” Cooper said. “I’ve become a big Florida State fan.” He then picked Florida State, coached by North Carolina native Leonard Hamilton, to then advance to the Final Four.
The rest of Cooper’s Final Four consisted of No. 1 seeds Duke and North Carolina and No. 2 Tennessee. He also picked No. 1 Virginia to be upset by Oregon early in his bracket as well.
From there, Cooper picked Florida State over Duke in a rematch of the ACC title game and UNC over Tennessee to set up an all-ACC national championship game.
However, Cooper said he really thought hard about picking a Duke-UNC rematch in the national championship game.
“I think that would be great,” Cooper said when asked if he wanted a rematch of Duke-UNC in the title game.
In the national championship game, Cooper picked North Carolina over Florida State to give Roy Williams his fourth title and the seventh NCAA-recognized title in school history (eighth overall).
“I think this is the year, with their seniors and their strong core, I’m going to pick the Tar Heels winning the national championship.”

Chansky's Notebook: Greatest Of This TimeTodd Melet) Going to Charlotte, the Roy vs. K debate doesn’t seem close. The so-called GOAT arguments are always tinged by bias for your favorite team or sentimentality. And […]

Chansky's Notebook: Oh, No, Not Again!Could you handle playing Duke three times for the third straight year? Chansky's Notebook: And Did I Mention…It was almost as if the Tar Heels knew that Duke lost. Of course, it didn’t happen this way, but I could […]
