Located in Efland, Sankofa Farms, LLC seeks to change the intake habits of those affected by food deserts in Durham and Orange counties.

Kamal Bell is a graduate of North Carolina A&T University and the founder of Sankofa Farms. He wrote in a Medium post earlier this year that one of the inspirations for creating Sankofa Farms was to help residents get access to high quality, fresh food at affordable prices.

“I have become increasingly aware of the income and food availability gap that exists within minority groups. The goal of Sankofa Farms is to create a sustainable food source for minorities in both the rural and urban areas of Durham and Orange Counties.”

Along with offering fresh produce for sale, Sankofa Farms also offers a year-round S.T.E.M. based program that educates students on existing problems within agriculture.

As a recipient of the Agriculture Economic Development Grant Program, Sankofa Farms was able to expand its poultry operation.
