This weekend was one of the biggest in television and movie history, with “Avengers: Endgame” obliterating box offices with a $1.2 billion opening and Game of Thrones season eight, episode three, “The Long Night” premiering on HBO.
WCHL’s Victor Lewis is an avid fan of both Marvel and Game of Thrones, but has not watched “Endgame” or “The Long Night” yet. We asked him a few questions about how he’s staying spoiler-free.
How have you stayed spoiler-free this weekend?
Victor: Well, the same reasons I didn’t watch Endgame or Game of Thrones are how I’ve stayed spoiler-free. I played in three Magic tournaments over the weekend, starting with one on midnight Friday and ending Saturday night at roughly midnight again. Each tournament took about four to five hours and I came into work Saturday morning before heading to the second one, so that’s about 24 hours of either sleeping, working or sitting in a roomful of my fellow nerds trying to win a card game. Then, I spent Sunday at the Wings Over Wayne airshow at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base — which was pretty awesome — and by the time I got home it was too late to do anything but crash and come to work today.
Honestly, it’s today that’s been the hardest. People are talking everywhere on social media, articles are being written, group chats are happening. I haven’t told a whole lot of people that I haven’t seen either one yet. There’s a weird kind of social shame thing going on, probably self-inflicted, where I feel like everyone is assuming I’ve already seen it. For some reason, I feel the need to keep my nerd street cred up and just… not inform anyone otherwise.
Has it been difficult navigating social media as Avengers: Endgame and Game of Thrones spoilers and discussion take over?
V: Oh, nice. I was already kind of talking about this. Yes! Absolutely. Social media is spoiler central right now, and all I can do is try and keep a safe distance in the meantime. I’m not saying that I’ve had a more productive workday because of it, but… yeah. Nevermind. That’s totally what I’m saying. Can’t waste time on social media if even looking in the direction of Twitter carries the risk of spoiling the storyline of two of your favorite things.

When are you planning on watching Avengers: Endgame and Game of Thrones?
V: There’s a concrete plan for this one. Game of Thrones is literally right after I get off work. Sorry Thanos, but the Night King takes priority. Leaving work, making dinner, Game of Thrones. I’ve even got a fancy Game of Thrones beer for the occasion. I’m ready. As far as Endgame goes, the plan for that is to see it tomorrow evening at Silverspot with Wednesday evening as a potential fallback.
What tips would you give to someone who is waiting to watch these?
V: You gotta be on your toes. I mean, if you care enough already to care about spoilers, you’re probably doing fine. Common sense if your friend. Start real-life conversations with people you know are also into this stuff with “I haven’t seen the thing.” Don’t answer phone calls from the demons you call friends, they’re probably going to just yell about what happened last night on Game of Thrones because of how that one time you spoiled the Red Wedding for them, even though that was a total accident.
If you could do it over, would you see Avengers: Endgame on opening night?
V: You know, I think I would have. There’s something special about opening night premieres. I’ve just stopped buying tickets over the years as things have crept back. It used to be a midnight premiere, hard line. Now, there’s showings at 7:00 the day before. That’s not cool, or special, or an event. That’s just another movie showtime, y’know? But, yes. If I could do it again — Endgame opening night is definitely the move.
