On Saturday, December 2, some of the most iconic bands in Chapel Hill history will come together at Cats Cradle for a benefit concert to fight brain cancer.

It’s called “Rock Against Glioblastoma – In Memory of Sara Romweber.” Sara Romweber was a legendary drummer best known for her work with bands like Let’s Active, Snatches of Pink, and the Dex Romweber Duo (with her brother Dexter). Sara lost her battle with cancer in 2019; she was just 55 years old.

“Sara was a true artist, (and) one of the greatest drummers,” says Billy Barefoot, who’s MC’ing Saturday’s show. “Jon Wurster, Rob Ladd, they idolized Sara; Chris Mars from the Replacements, they were fairly close…

“When you got to know her, you were friends for life. She was a musician’s musician.”

Glioblastoma is one of the most common brain cancers, affecting about 12,000 Americans each year. It’s also one of the deadliest: there’s no cure, and only 10 percent of patients survive for five years after their initial diagnosis.

“It is a murderous disease,” says Andy McMillan, Romweber’s former bandmate in Snatches of Pink. “Anything they can do to get closer to a cure is great.”

Saturday’s show will feature performances by Snatches of Pink and Dex Romweber, along with three other iconic local bands of the same era: the Bad Checks, What Peggy Wants, and the Popes. Proceeds will benefit the Glioblastoma Foundation.
