Local musician Michael Daughtry stopped by Live & Local last week, ahead of the release of his new EP “Double Down.”

“This new EP (is) quite different than the last,” Daughtry says of “Double Down” – already his second EP release of the year, following “Wild Card” in March. Both EPs are signature Daughtry, with songs that bounce across genres from lounge to funk to dance and more.

“I always have this approach: I have this little radio station in my head and I’m like, ‘okay, I just heard that collection of songs. What would I want to hear next?’” he says. “I grew up listening to the Beatles and artists that explore different genres, (and) that’s ‘Double Down’: it’s a shorter collection, but it goes kind of country and then electro-rock, and then a little bit of world music and ancient music. Just had a total blast…

“But that’s having fun. That’s music. It’s the most fun that we can have.”

“Double Down” officially drops on Wednesday, August 27. Daughtry will celebrate with a show in Raleigh on Sunday, August 31: he’s playing at the Pour House Music Hall, as part of a fundraiser show called “Conserving Our Future” to benefit the Music and Planet Project.
