Terrell, Rodenbough, Jacob Sharp and Wood Robinson have now been together for more than a decade, making Mipso something of an elder statesman in the Triangle music scene. “Book of Fools” is their first album since their self-titled 2020 release – but it’s their sixth overall, dating back to their 2013 debut “Dark Holler Pop.”
But while “Book of Fools” is an extension of the band’s signature sound, it’s also a break at the same time. Mipso went into the studio with drummer/producer Shane Leonard, bringing in synthesizers and other instruments to create a more plugged-in sound. What’s emerged is akin to the Beatles’ “Revolver” or Bob Dylan’s “Highway 61 Revisited”: an album that reveals unexpected new depths and facets, while still showcasing all the qualities that have defined the band and fueled its success for the last ten years.
Mipso’s currently on a short break in the midst of a tour to support the album. They’ll head back on the road in mid-September, making a couple stops in Kentucky before returning home for a show at Cats Cradle Thursday, September 21. (Viv & Riley – another local band that just dropped an exciting new album – will open.) They’ll also be playing at Raleigh’s Lincoln Theatre on Sunday, September 24, along with Kate Rhudy.

Joseph Terrell and Libby Rodenbough stopped by “Live & Local” this week to chat about the album and play four songs live: “Radio Hell,” “The Numbers,” “Carolina Rolling By,” and “East.”
