Local band The Auxiliary stopped by Live & Local this week, ahead of the release of their second EP, “Hemisphere.”

The Auxiliary got its start as a solo project for Russell Howard, but the project has evolved since then: Howard is still the driving force, but he’s added Ross Gruet, Jared McEntire, and Brad Porter, and he says today’s version of The Auxiliary is much more of a collaborative effort.

“Post-pandemic, (I thought), ‘okay, I’ve done the solo thing, I’ve driven all over the country by myself, I don’t want to do that again,” Howard says. “As a band, I feel like we’re really tight…and musically, we’re at the end now of all the stuff that I had brought to the band fully conceived, so everybody’s contributing more, which is amazing.

“And we’re very proud of this EP: it’s been such a long journey for me, to learn how to do all these things that I had always been on the couch letting somebody else do.”

Led by a stellar title track, “Hemisphere” dropped on Friday, with four tracks that take the listener on a thematic journey.

“The song ‘Hemisphere’ is about wanting: that ambition to go out and get something that you want and not waiting for it to come to you,” says Howard. “But then the (overall) EP kind of tempers that a little bit: we want all these things, but we can’t actually have them. So how do you deal with that?”

The Auxiliary will celebrate the EP’s release with a show at Perfect Lovers in Durham at 8 p.m. Friday, March 28, along with Treee City and Creeperwave.
