In celebration of Pride Month, The Chapel Hill Public Library is hosting several installments of “Drag Story Time” featuring local Drag Royalty.
From the Library’s website, “Drag Story Time celebrates glamour, imagination, play, and gender fluidity while providing positive queer role models.” The event is a collaboration between the Town of Chapel Hill and the Town of Carrboro as part of their Small Town Pride celebration.
I was thrilled to attend Drag Story Time last weekend, featuring the fiercely fabulous Stormie Daie reading several books to an enthusiastic group of kids and their parents. The environment was fun, welcoming and exciting. Stormie looked absolutely glamorous, and other attendees took the opportunity to join them in colorful, bright clothing, including fairy wings, glitter, and colors in their hair.

The event kicked off with Stormie teaching a few quick dance movies before inviting everyone to “get the wiggles out” while dancing to Spice Up Your Life by the Spice Girls. Most of the little ones, and some of their parents, took Stormie up on the opportunity to move and shake a bit before settling in for story time.
Stormie’s book choices included “From the Stars in The Sky to The Fish in The Sea” by Kai Cheng Thom, “It Feels Good to Be Yourself” by Theresa Thorn, and “Julian at The Wedding” by Jessica Love. All stories included kid-friendly language and themes of being proud to be your most authentic self. While reading to the group, Stormie often paused to ask engaging questions and to be sure everyone understood words like anxious, gender, or sibling.
I briefly spoke with Tim and Sarah, parents from Chapel Hill, who were exciting to bring their child to Drag Story Time. Tim, explaining why it’s important to attend these family-friendly Pride events, shared that “hopefully this will allow our child to see all the shades from an early age.”
Stormie Daie was patient, excited, and expressive — everything you want someone to be when reading a story to a child. If you are having a hard time finding the words to discuss topics such as the LGBTQA+ Community or gender identity with your children, Drag Story Time is an excellent opportunity to start the conversation.
The Chapel Hill Public Library is hosting one more session of Drag Story Time On Saturday, June 25th at 3:00 PM. There was police protection at the event on the 18th, and I found it to be a welcoming & safe place for families.
