North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper is urging residents to prepare for Hurricane Dorian and he wants to make sure that pets are also included in plans.
“As Hurricane Dorian continues on a path towards North Carolina, our state is facing the very real likelihood of storm damage,” Cooper said at a press conference on Monday.
While North Carolina is not expected to experience the torrential flooding that occurred during Hurricane Florence last year, rain and high winds are in the forecast. The effects of Hurricane Dorian will reach the state as early as Wednesday.
The latest @NWSWPC rainfall forecast shows that the flash flood threat will increase today and tonight along the
Florida peninsula, then spread up the SE and mid-Atlantic coast during the middle and latter part of the week. The full #Dorian advisory is at https://t.co/tW4KeGdBFb pic.twitter.com/QMiHt3GeLl— National Hurricane Center (@NHC_Atlantic) September 3, 2019
“If you have not already done so, please make sure your family is prepared,” Cooper said, “and please include your pets in your plans.”
ReadyNC recommends several steps when planning an emergency kit for pets. Among the supplies recommended for pets are three to seven days of canned or dry food, a collar and leash, proper identification, medical records, disposable litter trays and a pet travel bag or carrier.
The former Sears in Durham’s Northgate Mall will become a pet-friendly statewide shelter.
“Preparations you make now could save your life later,” Cooper said.
