Every other Monday, Aaron is joined at 8:30 a.m. by Tom Jensen, the director of Public Policy Polling, for a longstanding regular segment called “What We’re Thinking,” looking at recent survey numbers and discussing what they tell us about American public opinion – election-related and otherwise.

This week, Tom discusses a new survey of North Carolinians that shows Thom Tillis with a 25 percent approval rating – caught between Democrats who think he’s too pro-Trump, and Republicans who think he’s not pro-Trump enough. Tillis’ low approval rating doesn’t actually put him at much of a disadvantage when it comes to next year’s U.S. Senate race, since GOP voters will likely support their nominee regardless – but what could hurt Tillis more is the possibility of some Trump supporters not turning out at all, in a race where Trump’s not on the ballot.

Other key findings from the survey: a slight dip in Donald Trump’s approval rating, an even lower approval rating for Elon Musk, and strong support for letting voters make the call in the still-contested State Supreme Court race, where the GOP candidate is trying to get judges to toss out 65,000 votes.
