UNC redshirt freshman quarterback Drake Maye and sophomore defensive back DeAndre Boykins each received weekly honors from the ACC for the second straight week. For their performances against Duke, Maye won Quarterback and Rookie of the Week and Boykins won Defensive Back of the Week. Maye won the rookie award and Boykins won the defensive back award last week as well.

This is the fifth time Maye has won ACC Rookie of the Week and the third time he has won Quarterback of the Week. Against the Blue Devils, Maye threw for a career-high 380 yards and added three touchdowns, including the game-winner to Antoine Green with 16 seconds left. It’s the fifth time in seven games Maye has surpassed 300 yards passing, and the seventh consecutive game he’s tossed multiple toucdowns. He also rushed for 70 yards.

Though he did throw multiple interceptions for the first time this season against Miami, Maye still completed 19 of 28 passes for 309 yards and two touchdowns against the Hurricanes while drawing comparisons to Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes.

Boykins’ win is the second in his young career after last week. He made a career-high seven tackles against Duke, including 1.5 tackles for loss and sack. He also registered a quarterback hurry.

Boykins has quickly established himself as a playmaker on the UNC defense, and made a pair of critical plays against Miami. Boykins sacked Hurricanes quarterback Tyler Van Dyke on fourth down early in the second half, then intercepted Van Dyke with 10 seconds left in the game to seal the win. Both the sack and interception were the first of his career at Carolina.

“He’s got the full respect of everybody on our team,” assistant head coach for defense Gene Chizik said of Boykins. “Because of the way he plays, but more importantly or as importantly, the way he prepares.”

Maye, Boykins and the rest of the Tar Heels are off this week, but will return to action next Saturday against Pitt at 8 p.m. in Chapel Hill.
