The UNC women’s tennis team has dominated ITA competitions in recent seasons, and just added more hardware to its trophy case this season. The Tar Heels claimed four titles at the ITA Carolina Regional Championships in Winston-Salem: two in doubles and two in singles.
The two doubles pairs claimed the Main Draw A and B titles on Sunday afternoon. Cameron Morra and Carson Tanguilig, the top seeds in their draw, dropped just two games in a straight-sets victory in the final over Duke’s Karolina Berankova and Georgia Drummy. The second doubles pair of Fiona Crawley and Elizabeth Scotty were seeded No. 4 in their draw, but claimed the title nonetheless with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Chloe Beck and Margaryta Bilokin, also from Duke.
The victorious doubles teams will now compete in the 2021 ITA Fall National Championships, to be played from November 4-7 in San Diego, CA. The two pairs are the eighth and ninth teams of Tar Heels to win doubles titles in ITA Regional competition since 2008.
Carolina kept the good times rolling Monday afternoon, when both Morra and Crawley won singles titles for the Tar Heels. Top-seeded Crawley defeated Ayana Akli of South Carolina in straight sets to win her singles draw, while No. 2 seed Morra overcame a strong effort from NC State’s Jaeda Daniel to win her draw in three sets. The win, which took nearly three hours to complete, is Morra’s second ITA Regional singles title. She and Sara Daavettila are the only Tar Heel women to accomplish this feat.
Morra and Crawley will compete in both singles and doubles for the Tar Heels in San Diego. Reilly Tran will also join them in singles competition as the fifth Tar Heel at the Championships.
