The No. 3 UNC women’s tennis team flexed its muscles in its first dual matches of the 2022 spring season Saturday, earning sweeps over Elon and Appalachian State in Chapel Hill to start the year 2-0.
Reilly Tran, Carson Tanguilig and Fiona Crawley, each ranked in the country’s top 20 for singles, recorded two victories each on the day. Crawley dropped just two games in four combined sets against her opponents. Sophomore Sara McClure won the most dramatic match of the day, rallying after dropping the first set 6-0 to her opponent from Appalachian State. McClure turned around a 4-1 deficit in the second set to win 6-4, then won the first-to-10 tiebreaker, 10-8, to take the match.
In doubles, the top-ranked pair of Crawley and Elizabeth Scotty had no trouble with their opponents from Elon, breezing to a decisive 6-0 victory. The pair split their weekend matchups against opponents from Tennessee in the Tar Heel Invite earlier this month, which was their first action since winning the ITA Doubles national championship in November. Scotty also won her only singles match of the day Saturday against Elon in straight sets.
The Tar Heels will have three more home dual matches in the coming week, with a doubleheader against East Carolina and Campbell on Tuesday, and then a tough matchup with No. 4 Georgia on Saturday. Carolina took a marathon win over the Bulldogs last season in Athens.
