The No. 1 UNC women’s tennis team clinched a spot in the NCAA quarterfinals in Orlando next week with a 4-1 win against No. 16 overall seed Florida at the Chewning Tennis Center on Friday.

Carolina overcame an early deficit as the underdog Gators won the doubles point. The team of Reese Brantmeier and Reilly Tran earned a 6-3 win, but losses by the team of Fiona Crawley and Abbey Forbes and also Elizabeth Scotty and Carson Tanguilig sealed the point for Florida.

The Gator momentum did not translate into singles, as Carolina dominated by winning all six opening sets. Brantmeier, Tran, Anika Yarlagadda and Crawley each were able to finish off their Florida opponents in the second set to punch the Tar Heels’ ticket to Orlando. Tanguilig and Scotty were each ahead in their second sets when their matches were halted.

Carolina will face either No. 8 overall seed Texas or No. 9 overall seed Pepperdine in the quarterfinals on May 17. The Longhorns and Waves eliminated Tar Heels from each of the last two NCAA Tournaments. Like this season, UNC was the No. 1 overall seed in both instances.

The No. 16 overall seed men’s team, meanwhile, fell 4-0 to No. 1 overall seed Texas in its Super Regional matchup. It’s the third consecutive tournament the Tar Heels have lost in the Super Regional round.
