The No. 1 UNC women’s soccer team continued its unbeaten season over the weekend, as it thrashed N.C. State on Saturday night.
Carolina (8-0-4) scored a pair of goals in each half and blanked the Wolfpack’s offense, leading to a final of 4-0. Four different Tar Heels found the back of the net, with first-year midfielder Evelyn Shores opening the scoring five minutes into the match after heading in a corner kick. In the 30th minute, sophomore forward Tori Dellaperuta struck in her fourth goal of the season after gathering a failed clearance by the Wolfpack defense and shooting from outside the goalkeeper’s box.
The Heels continued to set an overwhelming offensive pace at the start of the second half, with star forward Ally Sentnor scoring 34 seconds after the game resumed. The redshirt sophomore dribbled through four N.C. State defenders and fired a left-footed shot to pick up her team-high fifth goal of the year. Carolina’s final goal came from Kayleigh Herr, as the sophomore defender collected the ball in a scrum after a corner kick, poking it into the goal after it fell from the Wolfpack goalkeeper’s hands. It was Herr’s first goal as a Tar Heel and helped ice the game in the 73rd minute.
Meanwhile, the top-ranked Tar Heels’ defense continued to be stout against conference opponents. N.C. State were held without a shot on goal in the second half, and were out-shot by Carolina 24-2 across the full 90 minutes.
The UNC men’s soccer team failed to find that same scoring success on Friday, as they hit the road to face Pittsburgh. The Tar Heels drew the Panthers 0-0 on a day where Carolina goalkeeper Andrew Cordes had to make some critical saves. The redshirt sophomore came up with several stops, including two in the final three minutes of the game that were on-target from Pitt.
The draw means the No. 18 Carolina men (4-0-4, 1-0-3) also remain unbeaten on the season, while the Heels’ defensive effort marked the first time Pitt was held scoreless at home since November 10, 2021.
The Carolina men’s soccer team will be back in action on Tuesday, as they begin a three-game homestand starting with Elon at 7 p.m. The top-ranked women’s team are set to return to action and Dorrance Field on Thursday, as they’ll face Miami. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
