Despite being outshot on the night, the UNC women’s soccer team squeaked by Wake Forest at Dorrance Field on Thursday night, 1-0.

A 26th-minute goal from Kate Faasse proved to be all the scoring Carolina needed, as the junior from Phoenix rushed in to meet a Makenna Dominguez cross-field pass and guided it past the Wake Forest keeper. It was Faasse’s team-leading sixth goal of the season, and one of just two shots on goal for the Tar Heels against a stingy Demon Deacon defense.

Wake Forest held a 9-3 advantage in total shots, though just two of its nine shots threatened the goal. Carolina keeper Clare Gagne stopped both on the way to her fifth clean sheet of the season. As a team, the Tar Heels have allowed just one goal in their last six matches.

Wake Forest featured two familiar faces: midfielder Emily Colton and forward Emily Murphy, both of whom began their college careers in Chapel Hill. Colton accounted for two of the Deacons’ shots and Murphy played the entire 90 minutes. Seven Tar Heels, including Faasse, played the entire match.

UNC is now 8-1 overall and 1-0 in ACC play. The Tar Heels will be back in action on Thursday, September 19 when they visit Pittsburgh.
