Carolina continued its winning ways Sunday afternoon at Syracuse, using a second-half penalty kick to earn a 1-0 victory. It’s UNC’s fourth straight win, the last three of which have come by 1-0 scores.

Bella Sember contributed the only goal of the match, slotting in a penalty after a replay review for a potential Syracuse foul inside the penalty box. The scoreboard belied a dominant effort by Carolina in possession, as the Tar Heels outshot the Orange 17-4 overall and 7-2 in shots on goal. Syracuse didn’t register any shots in the first half.

UNC goalkeeper Clare Gagne made two saves in the second half to earn her fourth consecutive clean sheet and seventh of the season. Both saves came in the final seven minutes as the Orange attempted to rally. As a team, Carolina has allowed just one goal in its past eight matches, a streak which stretches back nearly a month.

The Tar Heels are now 10-1 overall on the season, 3-0 in ACC play and 4-1 in true road environments. Carolina will return home on Friday, September 27 when it hosts No. 14 Virginia at 7 p.m. at Dorrance Field.
