Despite trailing twice in the first half, Carolina found some late magic to earn a thrilling 3-2 win against No. 19 Virginia at Dorrance Field on Friday night.

Linda Ullmark scored the first two goals of her collegiate career to lead the Tar Heels to victory, including the go-ahead goal in the 74th minute.

The freshman from Buffalo, N.Y. also scored in the 30th minute, equalizing at 1-1 after Virginia had taken an early lead on a penalty kick. Ullmark’s goal came off an assist from Maddie Dahlien, who was playing in her first match back with Carolina since August 18 after representing Team USA at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia. Dahlien and the Americans placed third in the competition.

Virginia took the lead again in the 35th minute at 2-1, but Kate Faasse answered just three minutes later on a breakaway. Faasse now has a team-high eight goals on the season and has found the back of the net in four of UNC’s last five matches. The score remained 2-2 until Ullmark’s second goal gave Carolina the lead for good.

The Tar Heels owned a decisive 16-5 edge in total shots, 6-2 advantage in shots on goal and took seven corner kicks to Virginia’s three, though UNC’s two goals allowed on the night are more than the team had given up in its previous eight matches combined. It was the first time Carolina had allowed even one goal in a game since September 5.

UNC has now won five in a row, holds an 11-1 overall record and a 4-0 mark in conference play. The Tar Heels will return to action when they host Louisville at Dorrance Field on Thursday, October 3 at 7 p.m.
