Both the UNC women’s and men’s lacrosse teams fought through soggy conditions Friday for a pair of ACC showdowns. The No. 5 women’s team stayed undefeated at home with a clinical 16-3 victory over Pitt, while the men dropped a 19-12 decision to No. 3 Virginia.

In the women’s game, Carolina jumped out to an 11-0 lead over the Panthers at halftime on the strength of early hat tricks from Reilly Casey and Marissa White. Casey netted three consecutive goals in the span of less than five minutes in the first quarter, while White tallied four goals to her name by the half. White ended the game with a career-high six goals to give her 32 on the season, while Casey ended with four. All other Tar Heels scored just six goals combined.

The red-hot duo completely overpowered the Panthers, who managed just eight shots on goal. UNC’s three goals allowed are its fewest in a game this season. The 10-2 Tar Heels have just three games remaining in the regular season, with their final non-conference clash coming up on Tuesday at East Carolina.

Later that evening, the No. 9 men’s lacrosse team took on Virginia and did not enjoy the same hot start the women had. In fact, it was the opposite: Carolina trailed 6-1 after the first quarter and 12-4 at halftime. The Tar Heels made the score somewhat respectable late in the game and ended up outshooting the Cavaliers 47-36, but could not dig themselves out of the early hole. Lance Tillman netted a hat trick for UNC and Logan McGovern scored twice, but no other Tar Heel scored more than a single goal.

Carolina is now 7-4 overall and 1-2 in conference play with three difficult games to close the season: Syracuse at a neutral site and then back-to-back games against Notre Dame. The game against the Orange will come first and is scheduled for April 15 at 4 p.m.
