Carolina led 29-8 after the first quarter and cruised from there against Norfolk State at Carmichael Arena on Sunday afternoon, as the Tar Heels beat the Spartans 90-47 in the final non-conference game of the regular season.

Alyssa Ustby recorded her fourth double-double of the season in the win, scoring 10 points and grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds in just 21 minutes. She sat out the entire fourth quarter. Freshman Lanie Grant stayed hot with a team-high 15 points off the bench after scoring 13 against Florida on Wednesday. Grant and Ciera Toomey combined for 25 of UNC’s 42 bench points. Starters Grace Townsend (14 points), Maria Gakdeng (11) and Lexi Donarski (11) also reached double figures. Townsend started in place of sophomore Reniya Kelly, who sat out the game with a lower-body injury.

Carolina’s defense limited Norfolk State to just 24 points through the first three quarters of the game. The Spartans made just 16 shots from the floor and show 28.6 percent as a team. It’s the 12th time this season UNC has held an opponent to 60 points or fewer, the seventh time an opponent has scored 50 points or fewer and the sixth time an opponent has shot worse than 30 percent from the floor. The Tar Heels are undefeated in all such instances.

The win improves Carolina to 12-2 overall heading into the holiday break. The team’s 12 non-conference wins are its most since the 2013-14 season. UNC will return to the court on Sunday, December 29 at 4 p.m. when it visits Miami.
