The UNC volleyball program released its 2022 regular season schedule Friday morning. The program is attempting to reach back-to-back NCAA Tournaments for the first time since 2015-16.
After the annual Blue-White scrimmage and an exhibition game against High Point, the Tar Heels will begin the season with a series of three matches in Colorado in August. Carolina opens the season on August 26 with a true road game at Colorado State, who the Tar Heels beat in five sets in Carmichael Arena last season.
Carolina will then make the short trip to Greeley, CO, where the team will play a doubleheader on August 27 against UC-Santa Barbara and Northern Colorado. The team’s home opener will come the following Friday, September 2, against South Carolina.
That match kicks off a string of four of the next five matches being in Carmichael Arena, including two against Michigan State and Michigan on September 9 and 10. The Tar Heels beat the Wolverines in Ann Arbor in 2021. The team won’t return home for the next 20 days after that, as the next five matches are either on the road or at a neutral site. That includes the ACC opener at Pittsburgh on September 23. The Panthers were ranked for the entirety of last season and made the Final Four.
The ACC home opener comes on September 30 against Miami. After that, the schedule reverts to the standard two-home, two-away model used by the program last season, in which one weekend is spent at home, typically with Friday-Sunday matches, and then the next one is spent on the road. A notable exception to this is a stretch in November which sees Carolina play Louisville two consecutive times, visiting the Cardinals on November 6 and then hosting them a week later on November 13.
The Tar Heels play three combined matches against NC State and Duke, with the first two coming on the road consecutively. Carolina visits the Wolfpack on October 19, then will visit Duke on October 23. The Blue Devils will come to Carmichael Arena on November 23, the day before Thanksgiving. The regular season finale will come when Virginia visits Chapel Hill on Saturday, November 26. It will be a busy weekend on the UNC campus, as the football team will have hosted NC State the day before.
