Despite opening its dual meet season in hostile territory at the Cliff Keen Arena in Ann Arbor on Friday, the 17th-ranked UNC wrestling team managed to eke out a close 19-17 win over the No. 19 Michigan Wolverines.

Clay Lautt represented six of UNC’s points with his pinfall victory over Reece Hughes at 174 pounds, while Jaime Hernandez added four with a 20-7 victory over Austin Assad at 133 pounds.

The Tar Heels also received victories from Zach Sherman (141 pounds), A.C. Headlee (157) and No. 16 Kennedy Monday (165).

Headlee’s victory proved to be the difference maker, as he pulled off a 5-2 upset over No. 10 Will Lewan.

Ahead 19-14 on the team score heading into the final match of the dual at heavyweight, all UNC’s Andrew Gunning had to do against No. 5 Mason Parris was avoid getting pinned or losing by technical fall.

Gunning ultimately lost his match 4-0, but that was enough for the Tar Heels to hang on for the win.
