Monday night delivered the toughest test of the season for the top-ranked UNC women’s lacrosse team, but the Tar Heels still managed to come out on top by a score of 20-18 in a road battle at No. 6 Northwestern.
Senior Katie Hoeg had four goals and four assists to lead the way for the Tar Heels, setting a new all-time school record with 261 career points–beating the old mark of 256 set by Corey Donohoe from 2008-11.
Scottie Rose Growney added four goals and assist of her own, while Nicole Humphrey and Taylor McDaniels each chipped in three goals apiece for the Tar Heels (7-0).
Northwestern (4-3) led 10-8 at halftime, but UNC came out of the break and scored the first five goals of the second half to take control of the game for good.
Coming into this game, the Tar Heels and Wildcats represented the nation’s top two scoring offenses. UNC had also won each of its first six games by at least six goals.
