Behind 20 points and eight rebounds from senior guard Medinah Muhammad, the UNC women’s basketball team earned a 70-62 victory over the Pittsburgh Panthers Monday afternoon at Carmichael Arena in what was the ACC opener for both teams.

In addition to Muhammad’s contributions, the Tar Heels (10-2, 1-0 ACC) also received 16 points and nine rebounds from Taylor Koenen as well as 10 points and eight boards from Janelle Bailey.

The Tar Heels took the lead for good midway through the second quarter on their way to a nine-point halftime lead. From that point on, Pittsburgh would never pull closer than within six points.

It was the first career ACC victory for new UNC head coach Courtney Banghart, who joined the team prior to this season after previously holding the job at Princeton.

“I have great respect for this conference and all the coaches in this conference, and I know that every single ACC win is a good win,” Banghart said afterwareds. “I thought our team showed a lot of resilience. We didn’t play well enough to feel great about it, but we feel good about any win in the ACC.”

With the loss, Pittsburgh falls to 3-9 overall this season with an 0-1 mark in conference play.
