Behind a season-lowing scoring effort, UNC women’s basketball fell to Syracuse 74-56 on Thursday night in Carmichael Arena.

It was the third consecutive loss for the Tar Heels, who had not posted back-to-back losses this season until this stretch.

UNC (16-9, 7-7 ACC) was lead offensively by senior Madinah Muhammad with 19 points. Muhammad also accounted for three of the team’s four three-pointers in the game.

Junior Janelle Bailey (12 points) and freshman Malu Tshitenge (11 points) also posted in double-figures for the Tar Heels. Tshitenge also posted her fourth career double double, adding 11 rebounds to go along with double-digit points.

Both teams started off slow, taking a 4-4 tie into the first media timeout. But while Syracuse (13-11, 7-6 ACC) kicked its offensive into the next gear, UNC struggled to match its tempo. The Tar Heels scored just seven points in the second quarter on 13.3 percent (2-15) shooting.

Syracuse had 10 blocks — a season-high by a UNC opponent — with five different players getting at least one. The Orange out-rebounded the Tar Heels 48-41 and shot 44.4 from the field, including 60 percent (9-15) in the third quarter.

Up next for the Tar Heels is a road game against Boston College on Sunday, February 16. The radio broadcast of the game will begin on 97.9 The Hill at noon.
