The University of North Carolina men’s basketball team celebrated a win this week over Wake Forest University, however, the women’s team cannot say the same.
The Demon Deacons bested the Tar Heels Thursday night 75-63 in Lawrence Joel Coliseum.
The loss now marks four in a row for Carolina.
Despite the recent losses, freshman Stephanie Watts has been showing more promise than ever in what is turning out to be an impressive rookie season for the freshman. Watts recorded her fourth double-double with a game-high 24 points and 13 rebounds before fouling out within the last two minutes of the game. Sophomore Jamie Cherry contributed 18 points.
Wake Forest’s rounded efforts included 18 points from Elisa Penna, 16 from Ariel Stephenson and 13 from Ataijah Taylor.
North Carolina did not secure a lead the entire game, making it an uphill battle from the start. The Tar Heels only managed to tie the Demon Deacons for eight seconds of the 40 minutes, despite Watts’ grand showing and Carolina’s 25 points off Wake Forest turnovers.
Cherry’s six points in the first period kept the Tar Heels well within reach, ending the period down just 17-14. Wake Forest’s lead grew to be sizable after the second period when the Demon Deacons had 18 points in the paint compared to UNC’s four, marking the score at 36-24.
Wake Forest, at most, led by 18 points, on several different occasions, with the last 18-point lead coming with a little under six minutes remaining in the game at 65-47. The Tar Heels came within 10 points of Wake Forest in the fourth, as close as they would get in the second half.
Carolina will next play at three o’clock on Sunday afternoon as they visit Duke University.
