The No. 1 seed Tar Heels started the 2018 ACC Women’s Soccer Tournament in style, shutting out Virginia Tech 2-0 in the quarterfinals at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary.
UNC set the tone early in the game with a goal in the second minute by senior midfielder Alex Kimball from a pass by junior forward Bridgette Andrzejewski. Kimball’s initial shot was blocked by Virginia Tech’s goalkeeper, but she took advantage of the rebound to make it a 1-0 margin shortly into the game.
A great defensive effort from the Hokies kept it close throughout most of the game, but a goal in the 88th minute by senior midfielder Dorian Bailey gave the Tar Heels a cushion in the final minutes. Bailey intercepted a pass from Virginia Tech’s goalkeeper and scored from 15-yard away, ending any hope of a comeback by the Hokies.
This win moves Carolina to 16-2-1 overall on the season and sets up the Tar Heels with a matchup against No. 5 seed Clemson on Friday at WakeMed Soccer Park. The Tigers advanced to the semifinals with a 1-0 win over No. 4 seed Boston College.
UNC played Clemson earlier this season with the Tar Heels emerging with a 1-0 victory on the road on September 23. This Friday’s game is scheduled to kick off at 5:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
