In a message to the community, UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham said salary reductions and furloughs will be implemented for coaches and staff members beginning on October 1.

“We expect to lose between $30 million and $52 million of projected revenue, including ticket sales, sponsorship and television revenue, conference distributions and concessions sales,” Cunningham said.

UNC Athletics has already cut its sports budget by 10 percent for 2020-21, implemented a spending freeze, halted non-essential travel and left 17 full-time positions in the department unfulfilled. Effective October 1, the department will implement a salary reduction or furlough to each full-time staff member.

Coaches and staff members making $200,000 or more will have their salaries reduced by 20 percent, those making $100,000 to $200,000 will have their salaries reduced by 10 percent, and those who make less than $100,000 will be furloughed for 15 days. The reductions will be in place until June 30, 2021.

UNC previously announced that it will begin the fall sport season without fans in the stands. Additionally, no tailgating will be allowed on campus.

No season tickets will distributed this year for football, but fans who purchased season tickets will have the option to donate the purchase as a potentially deductible gift, roll over the purchase to the 2021 season, or receive a refund.

“This was not an easy decision. Our coaches and staff work diligently each day to ensure that our student-athletes have the best experience possible, and their dedication makes Carolina a truly special place,” Cunningham said. “This was also a necessary decision, because we must do everything we can to provide as many opportunities as possible for student-athletes in the future.”

UNC kicks off the 2020 college football season on September 12 against Syracuse in Chapel Hill.
