The UNC men’s and women’s tennis teams continued strong starts to the season on Friday.

The No. 1 men’s team finished out its non-conference schedule by shutting out No. 54 Vanderbilt 7-0 in Chapel Hill.

While Vanderbilt didn’t secure a point, the Commodores forced five of the six singles matches to go to a third set, which UNC hadn’t faced since the ITA Team Indoor Championship in mid-February.

The Tar Heels, now 15-0, will begin the Atlantic Coast Conference slate next Friday at Florida State.

Meanwhile, the third-ranked women’s team secured a 4-3 victory over No. 16 Virginia at Boar’s Head Sports Club on Friday afternoon.

UNC moved to 13-2 overall and 3-0 in the ACC with the victory.

The Tar Heels clinched the doubles point to get off to a 1-0 lead. And the two highly ranked teams went back and forth with singles victories before Kate Vialle clinched the victory for the Tar Heels.

Carolina will visit Pittsburgh at 10 o’clock Sunday morning.
