In her first year at the helm of UNC gymnastics, head coach Danna Durante and her team turned in several program-best results and earned a spot in the NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Championship’s regional rounds.
In year two, the Tar Heels goals are set even higher.
Durante and the Carolina program revealed their 2023 schedule on Tuesday, featuring a slate of meets that the head coach said should be challenging but will help progress the team.
“We intentionally created a highly-competitive schedule this year,” said Durante, “and we look forward to the challenges this lineup will provide us. Our schedule is filled with plenty of top teams in our conference and around the country, and we’re eager to get started and continue raising the bar for Carolina Gymnastics.”
The Tar Heels will host a team scrimmage on December 14 in Carmichael Arena before the regular season schedule begins. Carolina will hold at least five meets at home during the winter, including one against the NC State Wolfpack slated for Monday, January 9. The next match will be the Carolina Tri-Meet between UNC, Yale and UW-Stout on Monday, January 23. Additionally, UNC will host George Washington, Air Force and Temple for home meets during the season.
From there, Carolina will hit the road for its next few gymnastics meets. The Heels won’t have to travel far for a tri-meet at NC State on February 4. A quad-meet against New Hampshire, George Washington and LIU-Brooklyn is set for the following week on February 12. UNC also has road meets scheduled at Pittsburgh and at Missouri.
Two additional matches for the Tar Heels, tentatively set for January 6 and February 26, have yet to be finalized.
As part of the East Atlantic Gymnastics League, UNC plans to compete at the league championships in New Hampshire on March 18. If they qualify, Carolina will then head to the NCAA regional rounds, which are scheduled for March 29 through April 2.
In its 2022 season, UNC gymnastics earned the EAGL regular-season title, going undefeated against other programs in the league. The NCAA regional berth it earned against Towson was the team’s first since 2017 and helped land its highest final NCAA ranking in a decade.
“We are excited about our 2023 schedule,” Durante said Tuesday. “This team is determined to build on last year’s success and is looking forward to the opportunities we will have to strengthen the brand of Carolina Gymnastics.”
