For the third time in the program’s storied history, the top-ranked UNC field hockey team capped off a perfect season–defeating the No. 2 Maryland Terrapins 2-0 in Louisville at the NCAA Championship Game.

The Tar Heels end the year 23-0 after a dominant campaign that saw them run through their competition with ease.

Megan DuVernois scored the game’s opening goal on Sunday in the 21st minute, while freshman Erin Matson scored 10 minutes later to give UNC some insurance.

Neither side was able to score in the second half, in a game where Maryland actually out-shot the Tar Heels 9-8.

It marks the seventh national championship for UNC, all of them coming under head coach Karen Shelton.

WCHL’s Aaron Keck spoke with Karen Shelton following the NCAA title win.

This was also the Tar Heels’ first title since 2009 and first undefeated season since 2007.

Senior Ashley Hoffman was named the NCAA Championship MVP.

“For me, and I think I can speak for everyone, it’s definitely a dream come true,” Hoffman said afterwards. “It’s something you aspire to do from the minute you decide to play college field hockey. It’s the highest award you can receive in this country at the collegiate level. It is such an honor to play for Coach Shelton and to win this with this team.”
