Sophomore transfer Paityn Wirth scored twice on Sunday at Karen Shelton Stadium to help lead the UNC field hockey team to a 5-1 victory over the Virginia Cavaliers in what was the home opener for this season’s Tar Heels.

Wirth’s goals were her first ever scores as a Tar Heel. She was joined by Erin Matson, Eva Smolenaars and Hannah Griggs in finding the back of the net, with the group combining to push UNC’s record to 3-1 so far this season.

Virginia (3-2) was held scoreless until the fourth quarter and managed just 10 shots compared to 21 for the Tar Heels.

“I couldn’t be happier with the way we shared the ball and the energy and the result,” UNC head coach Karen Shelton said afterwards. “We got our eyes up and we worked hard for each other. I’m very pleased and I hope we can build on it for tomorrow.”
