UNC scored four runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back on the way to a Super Regional sweep of Stetson and another trip to the College World Series.
This is Carolina baseball’s first Super Regional win since 2013.
Carolina, the number six national seed in this year’s tournament, scored seven runs in each contest, winning Friday’s game 7-4 before taking Saturday’s contest 7-5.
Stetson put a scare into the Tar Heels in the ninth inning of each game. The Hatters loaded the bases on Friday before a flyout to the warning track in left field off the bat of Brooks Wilson closed game one. UNC entered the final stanza of game two with a 7-4 lead before Stetson scored one run and put two runners on base with Wilson at the plate again. Wilson hit another shot to the warning track, this time in center field, that was caught at the wall.
After throwing 50 pitches in Friday’s contest, Josh Hiatt came in for the save on Saturday.
UNC is the first team to punch it’s ticket to the CWS in Omaha, Nebraska. Carolina will face the winner of the Oregon State – Minnesota Super Regional. Oregon State took game one.
The CWS is scheduled to begin next Saturday, June 16.
