A trio of UNC defensive backs announced their decisions to opt out of the upcoming 2020 college football season due to concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.

Senior safety D.J. Ford joined redshirt sophomore Javon Terry and redshirt junior Bryce Watts in making the choice to opt out, just days after head coach Mack Brown told the media the team’s secondary had a chance to be special because of its depth.

Ford was expected to compete with senior Myles Wolfolk for a starting position this season after starting seven games in 2019 and recording 54 tackles and a sack.

Terry appeared in all 13 of UNC’s games a year ago as a redshirt freshman, but recorded just four tackles.

Watts, meanwhile, will be sitting out for the second straight season after transferring to UNC from Virginia Tech following his sophomore campaign in 2018.

The trio now gives the Tar Heels a total of four players who have opted out so far, with offensive lineman Triston Miller previously making that call for what were deemed “personal reasons.”

All players will remain on scholarship, but no decision has been made on whether this will burn a year of eligibility for them.
