In a second-round matchup thoroughly dominated by the No. 7 Texas A&M Aggies, UNC’s NCAA Tournament run came to an end in an 86-65 loss on Sunday night in Charlotte.
The second-seeded Tar Heels came out of the gate playing well with an early seven-point lead before going cold from the field. Carolina shot just 6-31 from three-point range on the night.
Meanwhile, Texas A&M dominated inside with size that UNC couldn’t match. The Aggies had four scorers in double figures, led by 6 foot 10 inch, 266-pound center Tyler Davis with 18 points and nine rebounds. A&M also blocked eight of the Tar Heels shot attempts.
Texas A&M shot 52 percent from the field and 42 percent from three, compared with 33 and 19 from UNC.
The loss marks the end of the careers for Joel Berry and Theo Pinson, who led the Tar Heels to Final Four trips in each of the last two seasons and the 2017 NCAA Championship.
Berry finished the game with 21 points, leading the UNC scoring effort. Junior Luke Maye ended the night with a double-double at 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Texas A&M will go on to face Michigan in the Sweet 16.
