A total of six Tar Heels were named to the men’s and women’s Tewaaraton Award watch lists on Thursday, the honor presented annually to the top male and female lacrosse player in the country.

Senior attacker Chris Gray–who has scored 45 points and led the top-ranked Tar Heels to a 7-0 record so far–was the lone men’s representative for UNC on a list consisting of 55 players, while five different Tar Heel women are among the mix.

Attackers Jamie Ortega, Katie Hoeg and Scottie Rose Growney join defender Emma Trenchard and goalkeeper Taylor Moreno in vying for the women’s honor.

Ortega is UNC’s all-time leading goal scorer, while Hoeg–known more for her playmaking skills–holds the program record for total points.

Growney has joined those two in delivering high scoring numbers from game-to-game, while Trenchard and Moreno make up the backbone of a dominant defense that has yet to allow an opponent to score in double digits in 2021.

Both the men’s and women’s UNC lacrosse programs are currently undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the country.

Only Syracuse has as many players on the women’s Tewaaraton Award watch list as UNC.
