Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, ESPN reported Friday that this year’s Maui Invitational is moving across the country to Asheville, North Carolina.
UNC is one of the eight teams slated to play in this year’s event, alongside Alabama, Davidson, Indiana, Providence, Stanford, Texas and UNLV.
The Maui Invitational is typically held in Hawaii on the Monday through Wednesday prior to Thanksgiving, but will run from Nov. 30-Dec. 2 this season due to the circumstances.
It will be held at the ExploreAsheville.com Arena, which hosted the Southern Conference tournament this past March.
The college basketball season has an official start date of Nov. 25 for the 2020-21 campaign.
For the Tar Heels, they have gone on to win the national championship later on after winning the Maui Invitational on three occasions–doing so in 2004-05, 2008-09 and 2016-17.
