UNC women’s soccer star Rachel Jones and women’s lacrosse standout Katie Hoeg were each nominated Friday for the 2021 NCAA Woman of the Year Award.
The award has been presented annually since 1991 and recognizes graduating female college athletes who have exhausted their NCAA eligibility and distinguished themselves in academics, athletics, service and leadership throughout their collegiate careers.
Jones had six goals and six assists for the Tar Heels this past season as they went 18-2 this season with an appearance in the College Cup. A public policy graduate getting set to begin at the UNC School of Law this fall, Jones was recently named a Third Team Academic All-American and serves as the president of UNC’s Student-Athlete Advisory Council.
Hoeg is the all-time leading scorer in the history of the UNC women’s lacrosse team with 370 career points. The four-time All-American helped the Tar Heels go 20-0 entering the NCAA Tournament semifinals, where they suffered an upset loss to eventual national champion Boston College.
She was recently awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, which she will utilize this fall during graduate studies at the UNC Adams School of Dentistry.
A total of 535 student-athletes are nominated for the award across 24 different sports and all three NCAA divisions.
The winner of the NCAA Woman of the Year award will be announced later this fall.
