Duke fans like to refer to Mike Krzyzewski as the GOAT (Greatest Of All Time). But the national media is finally noticing that Roy Williams may be his rival in that respect, as well.

The ACC may not think so — In the last two seasons, Williams has two NCAA title game appearances, two ACC regular season championships, one ACC tournament title and only nine ACC Coach of the Year votes to his credit — but two stories from Bleacher Report and NBC Sports published this week make a case that Ol’ Roy may be at least the GOTT (Greatest Of This Time).

The chart in one story shows Williams has 11 more NCAA Tournament victories (55) than Coach K’s 44 (Roy is going for his third national title tonight; K has five, three since 2000, which is the time frame of this comparison). Williams also reached Final Fours his last two years at Kansas, 2002 and 2003.

And remember K has not missed an NCAA tournament since 2000, while Roy has missed one (2010) but has NEVER lost his first game in the Big Dance. Krzyzewski has been one and done five times (1984,1996, 2007, 2012, 2014).

Also, citing Roy’s 8 ACC regular-season titles compared to K’s 3 since 2004, seven times Carolina and Duke have met in the last game with first place (outright or a share) at stake. Roy’s record in those games is 7-0.

And lest we forget, Roy has head-coached 29 seasons and K for 42.

Krzyzewki’s all-time highest 1071 career wins averages 25.5 per season. Roy has won 815 games for an average of 28 per season. Hypothetically, had Roy started coaching at 28 like K (who is three yeas older) instead of 38, his average of 28 wins would give him 1092 right now. Roy is likely to keep coaching at least as long as K.
