After a solid run through one of the most prestigious early season tournaments in women’s tennis, top-seeded Makenna Jones of UNC was upset on Sunday in the semifinals of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships–falling 6-1, 6-4 to Duke freshman Maria Mateas, the nation’s top incoming newcomer.

Ranked No. 2 overall among individuals in the Oracle/ITA rankings, Jones defeated a pair of fellow top-15 players in two of her three matches prior to reaching the semifinals.

She was attempting to join Jamie Loeb (2013) as the only Tar Heels to have claimed victory at the event, which is held in Pacific Palisades, California.
